What is the most prevalent behavior of deception?
Research in this area consistently indicates no single behavior, in and of itself, means anything and to believe otherwise could be disastrous. To be successful and accurate in deceptive determinations, we must first know what normal unstressed behavior associated with truthfulness for particular person looks like. Once a person engages in deceitful activity we must then collect verbal and nonverbal indicators of stress related to deception in groups commonly identified as “clusters.” Only then can we achieve the necessary confidence in our assessment and determination of a person’s truthfulness and veracity.
How long does it take to become proficient using these skills?
You will be able to begin immediately using some the skills; however, each person’s ability and skill level will vary and there is no substitution for practice. As with any newly acquired skill, some possess a natural ability to perform, nonetheless, proper foundation, training, and practice are necessary to refine, hone and build confidence in these areas of human behavior. These skills are extremely perishable and without practicing constant usage will diminish.
Can I get good results using these techniques regardless of the type of person interviewed?
Simply, some people are very good at lying and deceiving others and lack guilt or remorse in hurting or harming others. These types of people are typically categorized as psychopaths or sociopaths. The good news is recent research has demonstrated that the manifestation of stress associated with deception occurs in these individuals just as with anyone else except they have the ability to mask the outward expression. By employing the techniques and methods in our training, the interviewer can realize higher than normal successes even with a psychopath.
Some people are just obnoxious and rude, defy authority, and extremely resistant of any inquiry. How can I realize favorable results with these uncooperative individuals?
Recently, much interest has been given to this area of dealing with difficult people in all kinds of situations including the customer service industry and human relations arena. Bottom line is there are no adequate substitutions for proper preparation and anticipation for encountering these individuals and having properly developed strategies. When dealing with these difficult personalities, it has been repeatedly demonstrated in research and actual practice that strong interpersonal communication skills will persevere thereby generating higher levels of confidence and greater perceptions of professionalism. Simply, some trainers identified this process as: planning, persistence and professionalism.
